Martha Stewart, hostess extraordinaire, is still participating in the holiday most associated with food and entertaining this year. “It’s not true that I gave up Thanksgiving!,” Stewart wrote in a multi-part Instagram post. The lifestyle and food expert also shared that she was “baking lemon tarts, cranberry tarts, chocolate pecan pies, pecan pies and pumpkin pies.”Chef Marcus Samuelsson and Martha Stewart on the 'Today' show last week. I’ve been blessed to travel the world chasing flavors, wandering through markets, dining at fancy restaurants and eating at mom-and-pop food trucks. It makes me think of a woman who inspires me like no other: the great Creole chef Leah Chase. “In my dining room, we changed the course of America over a bowl of gumbo and some fried chicken,” she once said. I turned to her legacy for inspiration, motivated by how her restaurant helped shape the civil rights movement and sustained the community. To me, this is the spirit of true American food, which is more democratic than ever.

It’s a problem that the guests at the Black on Black dinner, and many others, hope to change. “What we’re trying to do is change what leadership looks like and bring more people into the wine industry. Ikimi Dubose-Woodson leads The Roots Fund, a non-profit working to create opportunities for minorities to have successful careers in the wine industry. “The amount of money and wealth that’s generated in the wine and spirits industry is never talked about,” said Burston. Connection and communicationA lack of communication between the predominantly White-owned wine industry and minority communities has also slowed diversity efforts, several dinner guests agreed.

Goodbye to the Bread Basket. Hello to the Bread Course.

At Nura, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, it’s two fresh rounds of butter-drenched naan, nestling a pair of warm Parker House rolls. At Dauphine’s, in Washington, D.C., it’s fat slices of sweet potato brioche with buttermilk biscuits and a demi-baguette. At Le Fantastique, in San Francisco, the “Bread & Butter” gets equal billing with the mains: $12 for a baguette with smoked-peppercorn-and-yuzu-kosho-infused butter. Hav & Mar’s basket with Ethiopian-influenced teff buttermilk biscuits and sweet blue cornbread is $19, Nura’s basket is $21 and both offerings come with an assortment of dips. Customers would ask, “$21 for a bread basket?” But, Ms. Short said, that’s always followed by, “It was totally worth it.”
